Well, we go again, this team continues to be a story of
frustration
The season began with high expectations with management
spending over $60 million on workouts and supporting one of the highest ranked
tenders in the league.
Things looked to be falling right into place with the team
coming out of the gate like gangbusters with a 4-0 start, including a shutout
by Korpisalo. But, then just as hot as
the team was, the bottom has fallen out with 5 straight losses.
The offense just has not been there as expected this year so
far and the goaltending has been way too inconsistent with .888 SA%.
Some are pointing to the trade of high-flying young forward Grigori
Denisenko as the source of the team’s struggles as they have not won since the
deal. That being said, the team has high
hopes in the youngster, Ozzy Wiesblatt, that came the other way in the deal. But, he is taking longer to fit in than hoped
for.
On the bright side, the team’s number one line of Boeser,
Vilardi, and Virtanen has been operating a point per player per game. The blueline has been as inconsistent as any
other facet of this team, Heiskanen and Lijegen have been providing solid and
dependable defensive play with a little offense thrown in there.
With a game against Columbus tonight the Canes hope to pull
off a win to come out of the first 10 games of the season .500 and can look to
improve from there. On a side note,
Morgan Rielly is said to be on the market as he is set to be a UFA at the end
of the season.
