Unexpected leaders start to emerge

Sometimes it’s not who you expect

By Bobby Berger

The Los Angeles Kings on the whole have been pleased with their start to the season, collecting 9 points in their first seven games (4-2-0-1). But those expected to lead thus far have underwhelmed and unexpected players have lead the team. Stars Jared McCann and goalie Viktor Fasth have been nearly invisible. On the opposite end however, rookie Roby Jarventine is currently leading the FNHL in scoring (11 points) and assists (9). When asked about the blazing start Jarventine said, “all you can ask for is to be put into a situation to succeed and the organization has really done that this year pairing me with Eiks and Gurry.” All three players on that line have been soaring with Jack Eichel and Dennis Gurianov all in the top 20 in scoring thus far. While nobody expects the line to keep up this pace, it could bring good fortune if they can continue to be solid while the first line finally comes out of hibernation.

The other unexpected hero thus far has been Seth Jones. Jones, a career defensive defenseman, has started the season with an offensive explosion. Jones through 7 games has the same amount of goals (4) he did through 82 last year. Could this be the year Jones finally realizes the potential so many have sought after? When asked what is different this year Jones simply replied, “I’m playing my game and the bounces have gone my way. Just staying within myself.” The Kings hope to continue their success through a daunting next two games between last years champ in Philly and the always difficult Montreal Canadiens.
