It was not long ago the NY Islanders were sitting on top of the East with a 4-0-1 start to begin the short season that never came to be. Due to some scheduling shanananigans a restart was needed and the Islanders now find themselves in the middle with a 2-2-2 start to the new season. All is not lost on the start to the season as management is seeing good things out of their top 6 and the backend seems to be doing their job in their own zone. This team has only let in an average of 2 goals in five of six games so far to start the year, the one exception was against the 4-1 loss to the Wild without having the services of "The Breadman". All in all GM Vanturennout had this to say about the start so far, "It is hard to metally reset for a new season, but so far we are seeing what we want from a few of our players who we feel are going to be the foundation of this team in the coming seasons. Cross Hanas has fit in beautifully playing alongside Quinton and Lukas on the top line, he looks poised for a 60-80 point campaign if he can stay healthy all year. We invested a lot in Bode Wilde this offseason and even though he is off to a slow start with 1 goal in 6 games but the signs are showing it is only a matter of time before the offense comes. Bode has been physical averaging over two hits a game, and shoting the puck at a good clip averaging over 3 shots a game. With Artemi Panarin missing 3 games early in the year, they expect him back in the lineup tomorrow as they hope to flip the script against the Carolina Hurricanes who have benefited greatly from the restart. With both Quinton and Richard on pace to hit their endorsement deals and a bunch of contracts coming off the books at the end of the season, this season is really about getting a good look at the players that will lead this group to the next era of Islanders hockey. I am looking forward to the games ahead."
We will see where we sit after the next 20 games and keep following the progress of the team in the weeks to come.
