Flyers Staying Afloat

By Julian B

Tuesday's contest between the Isles and Flyers had all the ingredients for disaster for Philly. Richard Bachman was due for a game off, and leading scorer Mitch Wahl was out after being banged up in their prior contest. Philly called up farm goalie David Rittich and 21 year old right winger Warren Foegele. Foegele had previously been called up early early in the season against Dallas where he scored a goal in an 8-2 win.

The Flyers were outplayed in shots 12-7 in the first 20 minutes but escaped with a 1-0 lead on Backstrom's 28th of the season at 17:57. The second was a tightly contested frame where the Flyers again scored the loan goal; Backstrom again with his 29th at 9:26. The Isles finally figured out Hiller at 11:08 on a goal from Couturier before the Flyers ultimately ended the contest with a last minute goal from Byfuglien (10).

The win gives the Flyers an all important four point swing on the Isles further cementing them above the playoff bubble. The East is playing out as it usually does as four teams (Sens, Isles, Cats and Canes) all sit just a single point behind the Boston Bruins. The Tampa Bay Lightning sit tied with the Flyers at 79 points but have endured a six game losing streak, similar to the Toronto Maple Leafs whose six game down-spiral has pushed them six points out of the race.

Lots of excitement yet to come as the playoff matchups fall into place. Every team has eight games or less remaining.
