Hot Start for Defending Champs

By Julian B

The Flyers are winners of five straight since opening the season with a loss to Arizona. Sitting first in the east at 5-1-1-1, Philly management is just hoping for some form of consistency throughout the season. Last season they bounced around and at one point were outside the playoff picture before loading up at the trade deadline.

Filip Zadina leads the club with 9 points (4 goals and 5 assists) through the eight games, closely followed by German Rubtsov (4 goals and 4 assists). They have benefited from an unexpected hot start from 3rd liner Givani Smith who leads the club with 5 goals and has seen promotion to the 2nd line. On the goaltending front Martin Jones has enjoyed the lions share with seven appearances sporting a 2.43gaa and 0.913s%, very similar to last seasons overall stats. We expect to see Annunen with a few more appearances as the season progresses. The expectation was closer to a 50/50 split but with Jones' hot start it is difficult to ice the hot hand.

Up next, the Flyers head to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes. The Canes have had a hot start themselves sitting at 5-2-0-1 led by six goals from Jake Virtanen.
