It's been a long rebuild for the New Jersey Devils, but after just 7 games, the team is giving what fans have been waiting for -- wins.
The Devils are off to a red hot 5-1-0-1 start, tying the lead league with 11 points. A convincing 5-2 victory over the historically dominant Nashville Predators was impressive, especially on the road, which for the past decade was a sure loss.
Even at 35, future hall of fame goaltender Calvin Pickard has shown he has plenty left in the tank. Pickard is 5-1 with a 1.49 GAA and .944 save percentage. The Devils planned for an even split between Pickard and Laurent Brossoit, but continue to ride the hot hand. "We have the luxury of having two starting goalies," said the Devils GM. Still just 27, Brossoit is a former 3rd round draft pick by the Devils, already with 125 pro games and 246 farm games.
David Pastrnak leads the way with 4 goals in 7 games, but overall the team has the second fewest goals of any team in a playoff spot in either conference.
"We have the talent," said the Devils head coach, "We're playing incredible defense, and the goals will come."
