The New Jersey Devils have been in the top 8 all season in the eastern conference, but have steadily dropped through the standings. New Jersey still has an opportunity for the first time in years to be a playoff team, and showed confidence in the group by being buyers at the deadline for the first time.
Patrik Berglund was brought in to add depth to the 3rd line, which they believe will be a big improvement over Jesper Boqvist. Boqvist, a former 2nd round pick, was never able to transition to the FNHL full time. The 25 year old scored just 12 points in 50 games this season. With 1 year left on his deal, New Jersey was happy to unload his contract as he didn't fit into their future plans.
In Berglund, the Devils bring back the 39 year old forward who spent over four full seasons in New Jersey during some of the team's toughest times. "It was a struggle for me here during my time, but I'm excited to come back to see the team having success. I hope I can contribute as much as I can," said Berglund. With over 1500 FNHL games, Berglund is expected to hang up the skates at the end of the season.
On defense, the Devils are vastly improved from last season. That said, New Jersey saw Ryan McDonagh available and jumped to add the former cup winner for depth. McDonagh is statistically having the worst season of his career. But even at 38, New Jersey values his size and leadership.
With just 13 games left in the season, New Jersey is 5 points ahead of the 9th place Rangers.
