New Jersey Continues to Roll

By Nathan Erb

After years of disappointment and a painfully long rebuild, the New Jersey Devils are showing they're the real deal in the FNHL this season. Through 28 games, the Devils are tied for the 4th most points in the league.

Leading the way is 35 year old Calvin Pickard. With Montreal in a cap crunch, the Devils swooped in and claimed Pickard on waivers. While his first season here didn't go according to plan, he's found the fountain of youth with the best GAA and Save Percentage in the league, and a personal best. It's likely that the Devils let him walk as a free agent this offseason with Laurent Brossoit taking over the starting job and Juuse Saros, who's having a solid season in the farm, would back him up.

Pickard isn't the only one having a career year. David Pastrnak is on pace for career highs in goals and points. It's also been huge for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to return to form. Just 2 seasons ago, he fell to just 19 points in 80 games. He's already matched that.

Defense was another area of concern all of last season. The Devils GM addressed that in a big way by adding Nikita Zadorov in a trade and signing Danny DeKeyser as an unrestricted free agent. Already 24, former 11th overall Noah Dobson has been one of the few bright spots since he was drafted. He's worked on his defensive play and is always in position. Lucas Johansen looks to have established himself as a top 4 D man after bouncing between the minors and pros his entire career.

While there's still over 50 games to go, Devils fans finally have a product on the ice worth seeing.
