Despite a recent losing streak, the New Jersey Devils are now in a 3 way tie for the division lead with 66 points. Minor injuries to Ethan Bear and Jesper Boqvist have tested the depth and the offense continues to find consistency.
Former 11th overall pick Alex Turcotte continues to lead the team in scoring with 44 points. Since becoming a full time FNHLer, Turcotte has gone from 36 to 50 points and is on pace for 61. Dylan Cozens has already established himself as a top center, giving the Devils a pair of 23 year old centers for the next decade. "It was a difficult rebuild with a lot of growing pains, but we're seeing the results of our patience," said the Devils GM.
A glaring weakness in recent seasons has been on defense, but is now one of the team's strengths.
Noah Dobson has solidified himself as a true top pairing defenseman that can be relied on to play big minutes. In a move that appears to been win-win, the Devils sent blue chip goalie prospect Yaroslov Askarov, a 1st, and other prospects last season to acquire Nikita Zadorov. Zadorov The 30 year old is on pace for 35 points, one of the best of his career. Last but not least, unrestricted free agent signing Danny DeKeyser has returned to form after a dismal season in Edmonton where he has just 15 points and was a -21. DeKeyser already has 25 points this season to go along with a +5.
And in net, Calvin Pickard continues to have an all-star performance even at age 35. The long-time Canadiens champion is a pending unrestricted free agent, but expect the Devils to make a push to bring him back. It was expected he was the stop-gap for Laurent Brossoit, but the 27 year old backup has struggled at times. "We still see him as the long-term solution for us, and we're doing our best to get him some starts to build some confidence." Brossoit is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason.
