Devils Make Blockbuster Deadline Trade

Zadorov Acquired by New Jersey

By Nathan Erb

The New Jersey Devils have struggled this season, going into the year with what everyone knew was a defense that couldn't compete in the competitive East. Today, they address that for years to come by trading for tough, stay at home defenseman Nikita Zadorov. Zadorov, 29, is a consistent 30 point scorer who has spent his entire career with Nashville and Detroit. "He's a guy we've target for several seasons and we finally had the assets to make a deal," said the Devils GM.

The price was steep, but New Jersey feels it fills a major hole in the lineup. The centerpiece was star prospect goalie Yaroslav Askarov who was drafted 5th overall by the Devils. Askarov has developed modestly, but still isn't FNHL ready. Jusse Saros outplayed him in the farm this year making Askarov expendable. The Devils also sent a 1st round pick and two prospects to the Red Wings in the deal.

The Devils still have work to do on defense in the offseason, but with Noah Dobson, Nikita Zadorov, Lucas Johansen, and Shane Gostisbehere, they're much better positioned to add bottom pairing defense. Ethan Bear is likely to make the jump to the pros and Oliver Kylington has looked good in limited action this year.

New Jersey is still expected to be active at the deadline with John Erskine available as one of the better rental D on the market.
