Devils Make Blockbuster Deal

By Nathan Erb

In an effort to salvage their season, the New Jersey Devils made a blockbuster deal with the Boston Bruins, who also needed a shakeup.

The deal sent forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Andre Burakovsky and Alec Martinez to Boston.

Huberdeau spent 4 full seasons with the Devils, improving each season, including a career high 76 points two seasons ago. But he fell off last season, posting just 57 points, and this season was off to an even worse start. "Sometimes players need a change of scenery," said the Devils GM, "He's still a fantastic player, but for whatever reason, it wasn't working here anymore."

Andre Burakovsky was the more surprising move. Burakovsky spent 6 seasons with New Jersey, consistently as their most dynamic scoring winger. Even with the Devils anemic offense this year, Burakovsky was still putting up his typical numbers. "It was hard to give up Andre, but this team needed a shot in the arm. We needed to send a message to everyone in the room."

In return, the Devils acquired Anders Lee, Sven Baertschi, prospect Ian Moore, and a 2nd round pick.

Baertschi, 33, is a UFA after this season. If the Devils aren't in the playoff race, he'll be a top trade target at the deadline.

Lee, 36, has been a consistent 60 point winger and gives the Devils a new weapon and mentor for the young forwards.

In their first full game together, the Devils won 7-2 over the Florida Panthers. New Jersey has tons of ground to make up, but they aren't giving up on the season yet. "This is still a talented roster. I have no doubt we can go on a run."
