Devils Halfway Report Card

By Nathan Erb

The Devils have now played 41 games and sit second to last in the East, despite improved play over their last 10 going 4-3-3. Here's a look at the highs and lows of some of the players.

Team Grade: F - Second to last in the East won't get you a better grade, especially with heightened expectations heading into the season. The good news? The team has 3 first round picks, including their own.

FORWARDS:

The best: Mitch Marner was acquired in a midseason trade, but he's kept putting up points even after the deal. Look for Marner to continue his strong play in the second half and be an important part of the future.

The worst: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on pace for 29 points, which is an improvement over his dismal 19 points last year, but it's not good enough for the former 70 point forward. Dylan Cozens also makes the list. While he's on pace to have a similar season to last in terms of production, this was expected to be his breakout season and is not on pace to hit his endorsement.

DEFENSE

The best: Shayne Gostisbehere: The Ghost was signed as a UFA in the offseason and has regained his form since his early days in LA. The 4 year signing is looking good for the Devils.

The worst: Noah Dobson was a plus player each season to start his career, even on struggling Devils teams. This year, he's a -10 and not likely to break 30 points despite doing so every year to start his career.

GOALIES:

Middle grades for both goalies. Calvin Pickard was supposed to bring his cup winning experience and talent to be the savior. He's been average. Laurent Brossoit has been stealing starts which is a positive for the future as the team continues to groom him to be the #1.
