Tempered Expectations in Boston

By Michael Ramsey

After finishing the season at the bottom of the rankings in 2028, expectations for the Bruins was understandably low coming into this season. However, the new regime in Boston has gotten off to a surprisingly fast start and hopes to keep the momentum going through the end of the month.

The Bruins high octane offense has been led by superb play up the middle from centers Filip Chytil and Louie Caporusso. Chytil ranks near the top of most offensive categories and has shown he is ready to take the next step toward stardom. Combined with excellent support from top prospects Juraj Slafkowsky and Tyson Foerster, the goals should keep coming for this young team.

Most importantly, the Boston defense has appeared to be the most improved group on this team. Veteran goaltender Semyon Varlamov is showing no signs of slowing down as he has played to the best start of his decorated career. Protected by a strong defensive corps with three solid pairings, the Boston blue line seems poised to keep the Bruins competitive with any team in the league.

But adversity strikes, as Slaf suffered a concussion in the recent defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks, this injury will be a major test to the depth and discipline of the Bruins top nine. Without much help in the minors, the front office is relying on some veterans to rise up and push this young core during this time. Otherwise they may be looking to make a move and bring in some outside talent to assist.

It’s been a fun start so far in Boston, but expectations are to be tempered going forward.
