Devils Expected to be Sellers

Big UFA Names on the Block

By Nathan Erb

The New Jersey Devils didn't take the next steps they expected to this season. With a talented, young forward group, the team expected to be in the playoff race - especially after making moves for veteran help in the offseason. But, a terrible start and inconsistent play since has the Devils 9 points out of the 8th spot with 25 games left in the season.

"We've had some great individual efforts this season," said the Devils GM, "Huberdeau and Myers are having career seasons. We've gotten scoring, including from the blueline. Even the goaltending has been there for most of the season. We just haven't found the chemistry this year."

Unless the Devils can put together a winning streak as the deadline approaches, some high profile veterans are likely to be moved at the deadline. Here's a look at who could be available as rentals:

Jack Johnson - In what was expected to be the 38 year old's last season, he's putting up career numbers with 34 points already and on pace for 50 - the most in 6 seasons. Making just 3.75 million, he'll be a steal cap wise as a rental.

Tomas Plekanec - The veteran center can still skate with the best of them and is a great playmaker. An improvement at 3rd line center for most playoff teams.

Phil Kessel - Phil has 30 points this season in a much more limited role, proving he can still add depth scoring.

Vlad Namestnikov/Pat Maroon - Teams looking for a dirt cheap option on the 4th line will to either of these veterans.
