Devils Improve Defense Again

By Nathan Erb

The New Jersey Devils have given up the 5th least goals in the FNHL so far this season, but didn't think twice about the chance to add another key piece.

The Devils acquired 27 year old smooth-skating two way defenseman Timothy Liljegren in a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. A former 1st round pick, Liljegren developed through  the Dallas Stars system before spending 3 seasons in the Hurricanes. With the Canes major acquisition of Quinn Hughes, Liljegren became expendable.

In exchange, the Devils sent Connor McMichael to Carolina. McMichael, 25, looked like a promising defensive center. He scored 40 points in his first season with the Devils, but those totals decreased the next two seasons. This season was even worse despite an offseason workout routine. He had just 2 goals in 17 games. "He's a talented player, but we thought it was best for him and the organization to part ways," said the Devils GM.

Brandon Tanev was recalled from the minors to take the open roster spot on offense, and Tyler Seguin will take on a bigger role on the 3rd line and penalty kill.

New Jersey sits in 8th in the East with an important game in Philadelphia tomorrow where Timothy Liljegren will make his debut.
