Monarch Update and Other Musings

Where have they gone?

By Bobby Berger

The Manchester Monarchs are the AHL team of the Los Angeles Kings. The Monarchs had a solid season last year ending the season in the top 10 in points and the top 5 in goals scored. Nobody has any idea where that team has gone. Returning almost all of the same players minus Michael McCarron and one or two traded prospects, the team just is not the same.

The Monachs are toward the bottom of the league in goals scored and one half of their goalie tandem, the highly touted Sebastian Cossa, is floundering. Cossa comes in to today with a bloated 11 gaa. The lone bright spot on the team has been unheralded 24 year old Mackenzie Skapski. He has a 3.45 gaa through 20 games. Almost unheard of in the AHL.

The pro team has been riddled with injuries. This has forced some of the AHL players to attempt to step up. So far this has not exactly filled the big clubs needs. The Kings may have to look to bolster their depth if they intend to compete in a crowded Western Conference. The Kings will look to see where they are come deadline time. Is this the year the Kings turn the corner and become buyers, or will they have again have to play the role of seller? Only time will tell.
