As the Los Angeles Kings near the mid-way point of the season, they have mostly been firing on all cylinders. In doing so, the Kings wanted to take a chance and extend a few more of their young players. The Kings locked up Cameron York and Roby Jarventine each to three year deals. By extending these players as well as David Reinbacher and Matvei Michkov now, the Kings can start to see what their salary cap picture will look like next season. It will be in a word, tight.
As such, the Kings made a move sending young up and coming Dman Evan Nause to Toronto in exchange for Alexis Bernier and a 2nd. GM Berger's take on the trade was, "we really liked Nausey, but he was going to need a raise next year and with 5 almost 80 caliber dmen already signed for next season, we just had to give him an opportunity elsewhere while we could recoup some solid assets for the future."
Speaking of those Dmen, one in particular is star Jared Cowan. The Kings were thrilled about acquiring Cowan, so kuch so signed him to an endorsement. To hit that endorsement Cowan needed to score 10 goals this season. Cowan recorded goals 10 and 11 in the Kings 39th game of the season, the earliest a King has ever completed such an endorsement. When asked about this Cowan said, "the oucks have been going in and we have been winning, so I am not going to complain. Maybe the team was a bit gun shy with pushing the limits of endorsements, but knowing me, they should have pushed harder. Maybe next year." Maybe next year indeed, but the Kings are happy to have one endorsement already checked off.
Lastly, let's talk about those Monarchs. After stumbling out of the gates and losing 8 of their first 9, the team now sits at 4th in the west. Their putrid defense has now become a strength amd their goaltending has been much improved. The team hopes to keep the momentum going against a really tough, league leading Stockton team tomorrow.
