Caps off season preview

By Moreno Zuccolo

Washington DC

The Washington Capitals knew coming into the season that they would have to fight for a playoff spot and that’s exactly what they did. They unfortunately came up short by 1 pt due to a 3-7 record in their last 10 game.

After a year of change where we saw multiple faces of the franchise move to other teams, GM Moreno is now focusing on the future and ensuring to build a team that will participate in next year’s playoffs.

The Caps will need to work on 3 things:

1- Sign their young RFA’s especially Brendan Brisson who was acquired from Montreal in exchange of Nicklas Grossman. Brisson had a great rookie year centering the 2nd or 3rd line with 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points. He also had the opportunity to learn a lot from his mentor Grigorenko.

2- Have a great week going into the draft. The Caps own 5 First Round picks and 5 Second Round picks in this year draft. GM Moreno shared that he’s planning to retool the system but he didn’t close the door to use those picks to acquire players that the team needs.

3-Looking for a 3rd line RW and potentially a 5th and 6th D-man. The Top 6 forwards and Top 4 defencemens are a lock and shouldn’t see too much change. Adding a veteran RW to help Boldy and Brisson would be welcomed while the reinforcement of the bottom D pair will be needed to help youngster goalie Shesterkin and his back up Anefelt who was acquired in the Campbell trade.

It will be an interesting off season for the Caps and the Washington fan base is looking fwd to see what GM Moreno will accomplish in the next couple of weeks
