Decisions, decisions

By Toby Rice

This offseason is slower than the last for the Florida Panthers. That is in terms of trades, but maybe not so much the trade talks. Florida has completed two trades this offseason. Both to the west with one trade with Seattle, and the other with Vegas. The two 1-for-1 deals included a forward swap for a defenseman. The Panthers sent Carl Hagelin to the Kraken in exchange for defenseman David Rundblad. On the minor league level, John Beecher joins the organization in exchange for defenseman Daniil Chayka.

"These moves both improve our club from different standpoints. We needed D and Rundblad is a great addition," said the Panthers GM. Asked whether or not Beecher could have an impact this season, he had this to say. "With the new farm rules, we are going to have to start thinking differently when it comes to developing prospects. Guys like Beecher, who has a ton of talent, might have an opportunity to see pro minutes sooner rather than later."

Although Beecher is eligible this season to play for the Rochester Americans, it sounds like he could be starting the season in south Florida. "Roster spots are earned in training camp, but we like Beecher on this team this season. I think he has a spot if he wants one."

So with just two players moved this offseason, what else has been going on behind the scenes? Rumors have indicated that the Panthers are in the market for some big name players. They were rumored to have sent offers to multiple teams, but weren't able to strike a deal.

"We have had those discussions. We've made it known that we are in the market. We have a lot of assets, and we're actively looking to make a splash."

Time will tell whether or not the GM can find a dance partner and add the pieces he's looking for. If not, the team has salary cap space and will be active during RFA and UFA.
