Welcome back to another season of FPHL hockey! The Florida Panthers look to make their mark and put together a season with a successful playoff run. The team had a successful offseason, adding key pieces at every position. Here's what you can expect this season in South Florida!
Offense
The top six remains much of the same, but the first pick up during the offseason is Brayden Schenn. The forward comes in to center the 2nd line after signing a team-friendly deal. Young stars Isak Rosen and Simon Robertsson make the jump from the minors where they'll be joined by John Beecher who has been up and down the last few seasons. The third line might be the strongest depth the team has had in a few years.
Defense
The very young defensive core gets a veteran boost by the signing of Philip Larsen. The 33 year old sees the potential in Florida and signed a value deal of $6.0 per season for the next three years. He'll anchor the top pairing with either Kaiden Guhle or Conor Timmins. Carson Lambos and Brandt Clarke will play their first seasons in the FPHL, however their names have been linked to potential trades over the offseason. Rumors are there that they could still move early in the season, or as possible trade deadline packaging.
Goalie
For the first time in many seasons, the Florida Panthers have a legitimate backup goaltender. While journeymen have often served the role, the Panthers went out and signed Antti Niemi to a one year deal. The 36 year old is a great pick up on a $1.0 contract. He'll receive 25% of the netminder duties this season in relief for Matt Murray.
Farm System
The Rochester Americans will once again boast a strong lineup. The team fills out 15 players rated 74+ and many of them are hoping to see FPHL action this year. Key players to watch are center Ryan Leonard and Hunter Haight, right wing Kevin Labanc, and defenseman Nick Seeler. Seeler is projected to be a star defenseman in the FPHL, and this could be his final year of development. He is said to be the only untouchable farm player. All others are playing for an opportunity in Florida, or possibly elsewhere via trade opportunities.
Overall
The Panthers look to land a playoff spot this season. The team is young, with just enough veteran presence to lead. Could they still be too young though? The core has now played together for 2-3 years, but the defense is only showing 1-2 years of experience. Prediction: Bubble team.
