The Florida Panthers' farm system has been a vital tool to development over the years. Several of the Panthers' top performers are home grown, and spent a few years in Rochester. This season, the Rochester Americans find themselves well outside the Calder Cup race, even though they began the season at the top of the standings.
"It's important for us to win games," says the Americans' coach. "We understand our role as a development team, but we want to win."
The Americans are led by 23 year old Ayrton Martino with 88 points. The now-veteran is on pace for his best season yet after spending a number of years in the farm system. Third year rookie, Eduard Sale currently has 82 points and is also on pace for his best season yet. The 20 year old is also in a contract year and is making a case for himself. Frederick Gaudreau (81 points) and 19 year old Jett Luchanko (77) round out the top four in scoring for the Americans.
Fans are eager to watch Luchanko's development. In his second pro year, he has already surpassed his point total from his rookie season. The 7th overall pick in the 2032 draft, Luchanko is expected to make the jump to the FNHL next season.
"He's having a great season," says the Panthers' GM. "Roster decisions are obviously made in training camp, but we're happy with his development."
While the season finishes up, the Florida Panthers are in the hunt for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Should they make it, some of Rochester's top players are expected to be called up at the end of the season to joing the Panthers' black aces.
