The New York Islanders had to work for it, but they came away with a thrilling 3–2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in front of 19,105 fans.
The star of the night was Mavrik Bourque, who scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period. Richard Bachman was also outstanding in goal, stopping 31 of 33 shots to help the Islanders hold on.
Bourque opened the scoring at 5:32 of the first period, converting a setup from Artemi Panarin and Noah Warren. Montreal answered just 83 seconds later to tie the game.
After a scoreless second period, Bourque struck again at 7:05 of the third. Panarin and Matthew Coronato picked up the assists as Bourque gave the Islanders a 2–1 lead.
Montreal refused to go away, tying the game at 13:24 of the third period and setting up a wild finish.
Then came the hero.
With just five seconds remaining, Noah Warren scored an unassisted goal to give New York a dramatic 3–2 victory.
Warren finished with a goal and an assist, while Panarin had two assists. Coronato also added an assist.
Bachman deserves plenty of credit for the win. Montreal outshot New York 33–29, but Bachman turned aside 31 shots for a .939 save percentage. He was especially important as Montreal pushed for the tying goal late in the game.
The game also featured plenty of physical play. Montreal's Filip Chlapik was handed a 12-minute penalty and game misconduct late in the third period.
The Islanders weren't perfect, but they found a way to get the two points.
Bourque provided the offense, Bachman provided the goaltending, and Warren provided the heroics.
And with only five seconds left on the clock, the Islanders walked away with one of the more dramatic wins of the season.
