The
Montreal Canadiens announced early to their fan base that they will not be making
any deals by tomorrow’s deadline. GM Walsh is known for throwing out first
round picks for rental players, however they also have demonstrated a
willingness to just stick with what they got when it comes to playoff runs.
This year, it seems it will be the latter.
“We did poke about, but the fact of the matter is, in our opinion anyways, is
that it would take a specific kind of player to improve us on the ice. Our
commitment to the core of this team is as strong as ever. We have the best
offensive threat in the league, we have a Norris candidate, and our goaltending
has risen to Vezina level. This group can win as is,” said Walsh.
Reportedly, the team did make one significant trade offer that could have
included multiple first round picks, but things did not work out.
The decision to pull back from the trade market could also be two-fold. Fact of
the matter is, despite leading their division, the Habs have not looked all
that great on the ice for more than a few weeks.Special teams tanked well earlier in the
season, and as of late shot production has been trending downward as well. The
club remains a threat every night thanks to the best goaltending they’ve had
since Calvin Pickard’s peak years, and continued bashing defensive play
throughout the lineup.
Currently they are on a 3 game losing streak that is at risk of extending, as
Garret Sparks is dealing with a nagging injury forcing backup Zach Fucale to
play a string of games.His early season
