A lackluster start in South Florida has the rumor mills swirling. Could the Florida Panthers be willing to part ways with a young superstar to get this team going? We talked to GM Rice and it seems like nothing is off the table.
"We're not playing like we should be. We've got some players that are underperforming, and we want to be winning more games," said the GM. "We're what, 12th or 13th in the conference? And we have some of the most talented young players that we're building this team around. It's frankly unacceptable."
The Panthers GM seemed more direct than normal when we spoke with him. It is a sign that the Panthers are in "win now" mode. Names that have floated around as being available include left wingers Alexis Lafreniere and Nikolaj Ehlers. Those are names that were previously untouchable.
"When it comes to trades, we're obviously not selling at this point. If a deal comes along with a team with a similar struggling player, we might pull the trigger. Something needs to change or we will be big time sellers at the trade deadline."
While the Panthers may want to make moves, the trade market doesn't seem to be too hot right now. Finding a viable trade partner may be easier said than done.
