The biggest question mark heading into this season was whether or not the Florida Panthers would be stronger or struggle with an inexperienced team. The Panthers began the season with seven players 22 years of age and younger in their starting lineup. Half of their roster is 25 years old or less. Through 13 games this season, the youth movement seems to be paying off.
The Florida Panthers lead the Atlantic Division with 18 points. At 7-2-1-3, it's safe to say that this is the best start the Panthers have had in recent memory. Veterans Louis Leblanc, Sam Reinhart, and Nikolaj Ehlers lead the team in scoring, but it is certainly a team effort.
"Our vets are leading the way, which is what we need," said GM Rice. "We had to make some tough decisions this offseason, but we had those conversations with our remaining players. Our veterans are tasked with showing that leadership, and getting our young players acclimated."
Veteran Louis Leblanc, who signed a two year contract to stay in Florida this offseason, is entering his 6th season with the team. "I talked with our management, coaches this offseason before signing. They told me that their focus is getting our young prospects into the lineup this year, but they asked that I stay with the organization and be a mentor to these kids. I don't watch the numbers too closely, but I'm off to a good start. We are off to a good start. The talent in this organization is phenomenal and I am excited to be a part of it for another couple of years. We have unfinished business."
The Florida Panthers hope that they've put together a winning formula of veterans and young talent. Only time will tell, but so far this team has shown that they belong in the playoff picture, if not challenging for the division.
