Slow Start & Montreal Cap Gymnastics

By Wesley W

A
good pre-season did not lead to a good start to the regular season in Montreal,
who went winless in five games before their recent two victories this weekend.
An injury to Brock McGinn afforded the ability for some cap gymnastics that
have led to some looks for other players—and now with the blender in full spin,
Montreal will continue to do so until the dust settles.

Now coming off the IR, Brock McGinn finding himself with just a couple weeks of
waiver exempt time left sees himself heading to Hamilton, allowing youngster
Phil DiGiuseppe to continue playing. He scored in his debut game this season.

The team is also penny pinching by sitting Noah Juulsen in Hamilton while he
fully recovers from his own injury, and now is placing backup goaltender Jonas
Enroth there to save the final dollars necessary to get Filip Chlapik his first
games of the season.

With waiver exemption time only lasting a couple more weeks, something is going
to have to be set in stone soon. Trade rumors have surrounded center Kevin
Porter since camp, with waiver time coming up those winds will increase… but
now they’ve extended to others including Chlapik himself should Porter start
impressing at some point in these next few games.

Philip Lane has seen his ice-time cut recently, and at a cap hit over $3
million dollars, he may now be a luxury this team can’t afford with the newly
embraced desire for flexibility.
