Subban Out For Season

Flames' star netminder breaks hand in win over Oil

By Payton Knoph

Calgary (AP) - You could hear a pin drop on the Calgary Flames' bench when Malcolm Subban threw his trapper to the ice and immediately curled over in pain clutching his hand. When your star goalie, who isn't normally dramatic, is bent over in pain, you know it's serious. And it was.

While the Flames did haul out of Edmonton with a 5-2 win, they didn't leave Edmonton without worry. A quick diagnosis has the 28-year-old out with a broken catching hand, however, because the Flames were only a 4-hour bus ride from home, they elected to wait until they returned to Calgary to get an x-ray and MRI done to get an official result. If what has been diagnosed is true, this injury could possibly keep Subban out for the rest of the season -and possibly the entire playoffs.

An injury of this magnitude would be a devastating blow to a team who's not deep in the goaltending position. Cam Ward has not proved to be a reliable #2 this season, let alone a starter capable of taking a playoff team deep, and with the trade deadline long gone, there is no way for the Flames to improve. Marek Mazanec has been recalled from Stockton to hopefully be a knight in shining amour, and will likely get the start against the Vegas Golden Knights tonight. In his one appearance this season, Mazanek allowed 2 goals on 32 shots in a win last week against the Seattle Kraken.

"We are certainly going to be seeking out the best medical advice on his injury. While his broken hand hasn't been confirmed yet, our physician, on a quick glance, believes that it is. However, we are going to put Malcolm through every test necessary to see if this is case once we get back home." said GM Nagle after the game.
