Columbus Makes Deadline Moves

By Connor Moriarty

GM Moriarty had a busy deadline, but landed towards the lower end of busyness compared to other GMs around the league during the deadline period. Easily the busiest trade deadline in history, a record number of trades were made and GM Moriarty was part of the movement.

Columbus first acquired Cam Barker from Toronto to help shore up their backend for Olivier Laurdisen and cash. "We were happy to add an experienced blueliner who brings good defensive abilities to help with our goals against which we have somewhat struggled with this season."

Columbus then moved on from the Phil Kessel experiment by moving him to Colorado for prospect Shane Pinto. "Phil was outplayed by both Milano and Silfverberg and became expendable when it was determined he wouldn't be returning to Columbus next year, and saw an opportunity to replenish the farm which was cleared out by the number of graduates making the big club over the last couple of years."

The third deal GM Moriarty swung is the biggest one of the deadline, where he moved a future 1st, McIlrath and cash to Vegas for former Jacket Cory Conacher and rental D Keith Seabrook. "After moving Kessel we needed someone to step into the 3rd line RW and being familiar with Cory we decided it was worth the risk to bring him back to where he was drafted. We hope the change of scenery back in Ohio brings him success and being locked up for one more year makes sense to see what he can bring. Seabrook will also be key to our depth on defence in the playoffs as we continue to look ahead."

GM Moriarty also reacquired Derek Stepan and acquired a solid backup in Hannu Toivonen from Jersey and LA respectively.

"Overall I am happy with our team but wanted to build a little depth and Im happy with what we acquired without having to give up any major assets for our future. We look forward to a strong playoff push.....much different from my first few years here, its finally exciting to be a Jackets fan."

Columbus returns to action on Tuesday against Washington, who have struggled recently and are not on the playoff edge after looking solid for the majority of the system.....they will be hungry for a win.
