BUFFALO, NY — Left winger Jonatan Berggren has been scratched with a groin injury, and Sabres GM Mic Moore says the body part in question simply refuses to be a team player.
"The groin's not buying in," Moore said. "Everybody else in that locker room is bought in. The groin's over here doing its own thing."
Berggren, who's been skating the tightrope at 83% health, sits at 3 goals and 7 assists through 60 games — modest numbers that get a lot harder to build on from a folding chair.
"You need two legs working in the same direction to play left wing," Moore explained. "Right now Berggren's got one leg that's in, and one leg that's filed a formal grievance."
The Sabres are already sitting at -11 with Berggren on the ice this season, and his absence leaves a hole in a lineup that wasn't exactly overflowing with offense to begin with.
"We're not built pretty," Moore admitted. "We were already down to whatever's left after the whale thing. Now the groin wants attention too."
Asked for a timeline on Berggren's return, Moore shrugged.
"Groins heal on groin time. You don't rush a groin. A groin doesn't care about your playoff push."
Pressed on whether the team has a plan to cover the lost production, Moore nodded slowly.
"The plan is other guys score goals. That's the whole plan. I've said too much."
Get well soon, groin.
