Have you ever wondered what the full finances of the FNHL
are? We’ve done the math, and here is a full break down of the numbers, in the
end showing that our athletes are being treated very fairly.
With 1,312 regular season games, and using last season’s average revenue, we
can start off league revenues with a chunky 2.85 Billion smackers. There is
also the traditional $4 million per team for pre-season revenue, chalk up
another $128 million on the board. Last season featured 83 playoff games, using
an estimated average gate of $2.6 million, that’s another rounded $216 million
generated by teams.
Game Revenue = $3,194,000,000
Then there’s the additional league revenue streams. Participation brought in
$467.5 million last season, and often the league runs a playoff pickem game
that brings in another, say, $20 million. And the biggest number that we have
to estimate would be endorsement funds, which, can of course go negative. $316
million in endorsements are on the board this season, and let’s say 75% of that
money will remain with clubs, $237 million.
Extra Revenue:
Participation- $467.5m
Pickem- $20m
Endorsements- $237m
For a total of $724.5 million in extra revenue, for a grand total estimate of
$3.918 billion yearly coming in to the FNHL.
So, how well are the players doing then? With a $76 million salary cap, and
roughly an additional $2.8M being spent on farm contracts by teams, players are
taking home $2.52 billion in salaries, for
a share of just over 64% of league revenues!
If Gary Bettman were in charge, this would probably trigger a two-season
lockout.
One could also consider an imaginary TV contract that the
FNHL would have, the real world equivalent bringing in over $1 billion per season.
This would lower the player’s share by around 7%, but of course, this money isn’t
showing up in FNHL bank accounts, so we can’t count it officially.
