The New York Islanders aren't simply hanging around the Eastern Conference playoff race anymore — they're right in the middle of it.
After 40 games, New York sits seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 20-15-4-1 record and 45 points, holding down a playoff position while riding a three-game winning streak. The Islanders have also gone 6-3-1 over their last 10 games, showing signs that they could be ready to make a serious push up the standings.
And in a conference this tight, there is plenty of room to climb.
The Islanders are only two points behind Boston and Detroit, who are tied at 47 points, and just four points behind Columbus in fourth place.
At the same time, Carolina is only one point behind New York, while Washington and Florida are just two points back. Philadelphia is another three points behind.
In other words, the Islanders are sitting in the middle of a massive pack of teams where a short winning streak could dramatically change the standings.
For New York, that's both an opportunity and a warning.
The Islanders have scored 117 goals through 40 games, putting them among the Eastern Conference's better offensive teams.
The concern has been at the other end of the ice. New York has allowed 119 goals, leaving them with a slightly negative goal differential.
If the Islanders can tighten things up defensively without sacrificing their offensive production, they could become a much tougher team to beat over the second half of the season.
The timing of New York's recent success is particularly encouraging.
A three-game winning streak has pushed the Islanders into a strong position, and another extended run could have them challenging for home-ice advantage.
Boston and Detroit are within two points. Columbus is only four points ahead.
That's a gap the Islanders can realistically close.
But they also have to keep looking over their shoulder. Carolina, Washington, Florida and Philadelphia are all close enough to make a move of their own.
There is simply no room for complacency.
The Islanders have already answered one question: they belong in the playoff conversation.
Now the bigger question is how far they can go.
With 45 points, a winning record and momentum on their side, New York has positioned itself to make a run at the teams above them. If the offense continues producing and the defense improves, the Islanders could quickly move from seventh place into the upper half of the conference.
The Eastern Conference is shaping up to be a dogfight all the way through the standings, but the Islanders have put themselves in a very good position.
They're not chasing the playoff picture anymore. They're part of it.
And if this three-game winning streak is the beginning of something bigger, the rest of the East may want to start paying attention.
