Rarest of Breeds: An Actually Balanced Three-Way

THE BREAKAWAY BEAT By Mason Breakaway

By Ryan Cienfuegos

In the wild, unpredictable ecosystem of the FNHL, the three-team trade is basically our version of Bigfoot. We all hear whispers about it, we occasionally see blurry screenshots of proposals in Slack, but when it actually materializes, it usually ends in disaster for at least one of the parties involved.

Yet, against all odds, the front offices in Chicago, Vegas, and Vancouver just pulled off a genuine hockey miracle: a three-team blockbuster where everybody actually gets exactly what they want. It took some serious cap gymnastics, a little bit of shared retention, and a whole lot of late-night negotiating, but the ink is dry.

Let’s take a look at how these three GMs managed to find the perfect middle ground.

The Maestro: Chicago Blackhawks
The Haul: Brad Thiessen (85 OV G), Kevin Fiala (81 OV W), VGK 2036 3rd
Usually, when a team trades away a 24-year-old franchise cornerstone like Jack Quinn, it’s a white-flag moment. But Chicago GM Ryan Cienfuegos didn’t wave a flag; he built a contender.
Chicago’s main objective this offseason was simple: clear enough salary to afford Connor McDavid without actively sinking the ship. Getting out from under Derek Forbort’s heavy ticket was a masterstroke, but the real wizardry was getting Vancouver to share the retention cost on Anthony Mantha just to route him to Vegas. In the end, Chicago sacrificed their prized youth in Quinn, but they walk away with arguably the best goaltender on the planet in Thiessen and a premium top-line winger in Fiala. They paid a heavy price, but they bought a Stanley Cup window in the process.

The Pragmatist: Vegas Golden Knights
The Haul: Ville Husso, Ville Heinola, Matt Grzelcyk, Derek Forbort, Anthony Mantha (50% retained), Michael Hrabal
You have to respect the absolute clarity of the Vegas front office. They looked at their roster, recognized they had a core capable of winning right now, and decided to use their elite goaltender as the ultimate bargaining chip.
Yes, stepping down from an 85-overall Brad Thiessen to an 84-overall Ville Husso is technically a downgrade in the crease. But look at what that slight downgrade bought them: a massive influx of veteran talent. Getting an 80-overall Anthony Mantha at a heavily discounted $3.0M cap hit is brilliant business. Adding Forbort and Grzelcyk instantly patches up the blue line. Vegas traded a single shiny coin for a handful of very valuable quarters, and they are significantly tougher to play against today than they were yesterday.

The Architect: Vancouver Canucks
The Haul: Jack Quinn, Adam Engstrom, Ryan Merkley, Ridly Greig, Gavin Brindley, Yaroslav Korostelyov, Christian Kyrou, Brendan Perlini, CHI 2036 2nd, VGK 2035 3rd, VGK 2033 1st
If you are a Canucks fan, you might have initially panicked seeing Fiala and Husso leave town. But take a deep breath and look at the absolute mountain of youth that just arrived.
Vancouver looked at the arms race happening in the conference and smartly decided to play the long game. They leveraged their veterans to stockpile a war chest of draft capital and prospects. But the absolute crown jewel of this trade is Jack Quinn. Stealing a 24-year-old, 81-overall winger gives Vancouver a legitimate franchise pillar to build around for the next decade. Throw in a 1st-round pick and a highly capable young center in Ridly Greig, and Vancouver just fast-tracked their rebuild by about three years.

The Final Word
It’s rare to see a trade where you can legitimately nod your head at all three perspectives. Chicago got their Cup-chasing stars, Vegas got their playoff depth, and Vancouver got their timeline-defining youth. A rare tip of the cap to the GMs. You boys actually made it work.

Chicago walked into this offseason with a decent roster and some cap issues. They are walking out of it with Connor McDavid, Brad Thiessen, Kevin Fiala, a fixed salary cap, and half of the league wondering what just happened to their wallets.

If you are an FNHL GM and you see a DM from Chicago pop up on your screen today... do yourself a favor. Turn off your computer, throw your phone in a lake, and walk away. You are outgunned, and they will take your lunch money.
