Leafs Season Preview

By Jamie Weatherhead

Leafs go into the 2031 season with guarded optimism and a very settled team.    The off-season did see one major deal with defensive leader Jonas Brodin traded in a deal to Boston for Andre Burakovsky.    Other new faces include intriguing youngster Rodion Amirov who was buried on a deep Nashville Predator lineup and free agent signees John Erskine and Jakub Vrana who are expected to be deep pieces but tellingly, some of the better depth pieces the team has lined up, a great tribute to the increased depth the team has built up.   Probably the most significant part of the off-season was the new long term deals that both Owen Power and Jussi Valimaki signed, making it clear that they are key parts of this young team.  The majority of the team's young core is now locked up for the next few seasons, providing cost-certainty in an environment were the cap is likely projected to rise over the coming seasons.   The team will be banking on internal improvement from this young group which includes not just Power and Valimaki but also Trevor Zegras, Robert Thomas, Nick Robertson and Magnus Samuelsson.   Intriguing rookie Marco Kaspar also made the team out of camp and could be an important player also moving forward.    The team has been in a playoff battle over the past several seasons for the final Eastern Conference spots and hopes to qualify earlier and easier this year, but in a very competitive conference nothing can be taken for granted.
