Toronto Aggressive at Trade Deadline

By Steve Jelliman

After making the playoffs last season for the first time in years, the Leafs have a taste for it, and despite being on the fringes of a spot, the team has elected to push in to get there.   Over the past week the team has added the following players

Aaron Ekblad
Eddie Lack
Ryan Spoooner
Thomas Hickey
Thomas Tatar

To get these players the Leafs have moved on one of there top prospects Peyton Krebs, as well as Nicholas Roy, Aleksi Heimosalmi, Colby Robak, and a pair of 2nd round and a 3rd round picks in this years draft.

Crucially the club retained all 3 1sts they have in the upcoming draft and only Krebs could be considered a top-tier prospect.  The team have also recently acquired Marco Kasper in the Samsonov trade, so they maintain there prospect depth.

Intriguingly, they brought in Aaron Ekblad, a restricted Free agent this summer as a non-rental meaning they could either resign him, or accept compensation if another team does.

In terms of roles, Ekblad will play in the team's top 4 and is the main reason they were willing to include Krebs, while Thomas Hickey will strengthen the bottom pair.   Eddie Lack gives them a reliable option when Ersberg needs a rest and Spooner and Tatar greatly strengthen the forward depth.   Considering there is still around a quarter of the season to go, the Leafs should be able to make a real run again at a playoff spot, and have improved the team considerably without destroying their prospect depth.
