Load management all the rage in Cowtown

Subban's game load will be managed

By Payton Knoph

Calgary (AP) - For the rest of the 2025 season, the Calgary Flames will employ a load management scheme for star goaltender Malcolm Subban that is not much different than that of Kawhi Leonard of the NBA's LA Clippers. Faced with a fatigued goalie after 15 straight starts, the Flames margin for error was too thin to rely on him to rebound quickly with practice rest days and spot starts from unreliable backups alone.

Moving forward, Malcolm Subban will no longer play in back-to-back situations and will be rested for prolong periods when breaks in the Flames' schedule allow.

Thankfully, the Flames have found a reliable backup goalie in Marek Mazanec. The 25 year old has stepped up admirably, posting a 3-2-0 record with 1 shutout and a strong .917 save percentage. With Mazanec at the ready, the Flames can now maintain a trust that they can win games without Subban.

Tonight, Mazanec will make his second consecutive start against the struggling Arizona Coyotes. Tomorrow night, Malcolm Subban will make his first start in almost a week against the mighty Montreal Canadiens. Mazanec will then come in to take on the New Jersey Devils the following evening.

With the team playing many of it's games on back-to-back nights, it will come down to Subban maintaining full conditioning and the team's opponent to determine if he plays both games. But the thought is that he will likely not play many of these situations.
