Winnipeg Jets Expansion Outlook: Alexander Urbom

By Skylar Barth

The Jets currently sit 5th in the West. 56 points. Tied with Chicago, one back of Calgary, four back of Vancouver. This time next year, it is expected that two new teams will be added to the mix. What does this mean for the Jets? What does this mean for current power house teams? What does this mean for bubble teams? There are lots of questions, which in turn, has generated lots of excitement.

By now, every GM has an overview of how things might shake down. There has been an article of possible protection lists circulated. These news teams may not be an instant powerhouse, but let's take a look at some interesting considerations.

While protecting the top players on the organization is paramount, this is a team game. Quite frequently, when we assess perennial performers, we see the underlying depth they bring to the table. They have strong 3rd, and even sometimes, 4th lines. Namely when it comes to defence.

Being able to be 6 playable defenders deep is hugely valuable for an organization. And while defenders may not put up big numbers like forwards, they play an integral part in the makeup of a winning contender.

This year, the Jets are seeing that with regards to Alexander Urbom. Singed to a bargain contract of 1mil, he was brought over in the Patrick White trade with Edmonton, egressing from the Jets were promising JT Miller and Matt Clark.

Urbom has been a solid #5. He is on pace for a career year and has been sound defensively. He is playing well above his pay grade in comparison and would be a key target of an expanding team.

With many games being one or two goals either way, having this defensive depth exposed could be the difference between 5th in the West or 15th.

Time will tell how the draft shakes out, but this is one angle we have been exploring. And what it could potentially mean.
