A First Half of Ups and Downs

By Duane Goetz

Well, the first half of the season is almost upon us and it
is a good time to have a look at the Canes ups and downs thus far.

It has been a 40 game period made up of four 10 game spans
that are as inconsistent as can be.  The
team got off on very slow start, then had a solid next 10 games, winning 6 in a
row at one point.  Then another lack
luster 10 games losing more than winning.
Then finally these last 10 games going 6-2-2, crawling back into within
a single point of a playoff spot.

Crosby and Stamkos continue to lead the offense, with young
wingers getting better and more consistent every game.  Defense is still not a strong point of the
team, but it too has tightened up as of late.

Goaltending has been solid with Rask getting the vast
majority of play over backup Svenberg, who was brought in for Riemer in a
midseason deal.

On the farm in Albany the team has struggled to both score
goals and to but wins on the board.
There are some promising prospects that are improved in spite of the team’s
poor play.  There is plenty of work to be
done there.

Management hopes that the team continues this latest hot
streak and gets more consistent.  A
playoff spot is still within the teams grasp and if not fulfilled there will be
a great deal of disappointment in Carolina.
