Flyers Trade RNH and Jokipaaka

By Julian B

There is an expected level of success in Philly, especially since their Cup win in 2026. The club has been struggling for no obvious reason hence the clubs GM has attempted to mix things up through the trade market. Firstly, the Flyers moved out long time center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. RNH was a staple in Philly for the last 8 seasons earning 525 points in 604 games. The defensively sound forward was off to a sluggish start this season and was rumored to be on the trade block along with several of his teammates. A deal was struck with the New Jersey Devils, a one for one deal sending well rounded winger Nail Yakupov to Philly. Both players are hopeful they can bounce back their seasons with new franchises. RNH will surely be missed by his team and fans but in the game of hockey sometimes change is for the best and we wish him all the success with the Devils.

The second deal was struck Saturday afternoon with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Another struggling Flyer Jyrki Jokipaaka was sent off to the Pens for promising young center Francesco Pinelli (drafted 26th overall this past off-season) and veteran defender Jakub Kindl who was previously a Flyer back in 2025 when he was acquired at the trade deadline. The Flyers are hoping the added experience, familiarity and leadership can help steer the ship in the right direction.

Who else is available?

Dman Damon Severson's name has come up in trade rumors as well as goalie Richard Bachman. The Flyers are hoping to fight their way into the playoffs as the season progresses to the midway point and are not shy to make deals to give the club a fresh look. Others we expect to see discussed are Tony Lagerstrom, Evgeni Dadonov, Reid Boucher, Freddie HamiltonMattias Ekholm and Richard Panik.
