Youth Movement Gets Flyers Back on Track

By Julian B

What can be said about the season the Flyers have had... Puzzling result after puzzling result from a strong roster. Patience did not pay off so the Flyers looked to the trade market to mix things up. Pending UFA defender Brandon Gormley was sent off to Buffalo in a package deal highlighted by 21 year old defender Urho Vaakanainen coming to the Flyers. A tough pill to swallow as Gormley was a member of the Flyers for nearly six seasons and enjoyed some strong numbers and a cup ring. This was a calculated move to kill two birds with one stone... build to the future and mix things up to get the club back on track.

The Flyers hosted Columbus on Tuesday, resulting in a much needed win. The Flyers who had struggled mightily for offense found a way to put six against the Jackets. Aforementioned Vaakanainen led the way scoring his first as a Flyer and adding two helpers and a plus 4 rating. An exceptional coming out party for what the Flyers hope is a long term relationship with the Finnish defender. Warren Foegele who was called up five games ago, had an outstanding night of his own matching Urho's goal and two assists. Other multi-point producers were Tobias Rieder, Evender Kane, Ryan Hugent-Hopkins, Nick Backstrom and Dylan Larkin.

Next up, the Flyers head home to face Vegas (10-20-1-1).
