Early Season Check In

By Jason Besancenez

As we have played 16 games this season, roughly 20% of the schedule, the Blues sit at 7-7-1-1. 16 points in 16 games is a better start than the past several seasons, but a stronger showing needs to be seen in the remaining games to lock in a playoff spot.

There have been some bright spots, newly acquired Yanni Gourde has 13 points so far this season, rookies Zach Aston-Reese and Bowen Byram have 12 and 11 points respectively. The Blues have scored more goals than they have given up, but only barely. With the defensive core and goaltending they have, that was expected to be the strong point of this team. 16 games into the season, there needs to be a better performance from the back end to gain the couple places in the standings needed to make the playoffs.

As teams start to assess their position at this point in the season, is there going to be moves made? Possibly. The Blues already moved Ryan Strome to acquire Yanni Gourde. If that is the type of moves, we will see moving forward, it looks like the moves that may happen will include bringing in talented, younger players to keep an eye on building for the future. The roster is already full of young players, are the missing pieces they need more of a veteran presence? It will be interesting to see what General Manager Semyck has planned for this team, and giving them the pieces they need to make that push into the playoffs.
