Devils Score 9

By Nathan Erb

The playoffs may be out of reach for the New Jersey Devils, but things are looking up for next season as the team has new found chemistry after the trade deadline. For now, they'll play spoilers. With a 9-4 win, the Minnesota Wild's slim playoff hopes got even slimmer.

Jonathan Drouin led the way with a hat trick and an assist. His 29 goals matched his career high from his sophomore season and the 25 year old forward is now on pace for 75 points. Drouin was actively being shopped early in the season as he struggled to get going. After 3 seasons in New Jersey, it looked like he would top out as a consistent 50 point player. It appears the trade rumors lit a fire under Drouin, who has emerged as a star. "We knew he had more to offer," the Devils GM said, "And we thought early in the season maybe that meant a change of scenery. But we weren't going to give him away, and when we didn't receive serious offers, we told Jonathan he'd be staying and we'd build around him."

Jonathan Huberdeau, a deadline acquisition, has fit in well alongside Drouin. Huberdeau had 3 assists and is once again looking like an elite forward after a down year in Carolina.

Elias Lindholm had 2 goals in the route of the Wild and is looking more like the 60 point player he was in his best days in Ottawa. Still just 25, Lindholm has shown immense improvement in his defensive game and is chipping in offensively.

The Devils will travel to Philadelphia on Super Bowl Sunday to take on a Flyers team clinging to a playoff spot. Pavel Francouz will get the start in net. Here's hoping the team saved some goals for today.
