Dzierkals Comes Up Big

Flames' rookie puts up 3 points in FNHL debut

By Payton Knoph

On Saturday night, the Calgary Flames were bruised and battered in their 4-2 loss at the hands of the Buffalo Sabres. Sven Andrighetto excused himself from the game after his first shit complaining of a core injury. The injury turned out to be an abdominal strain and he is expected to miss a week.

Later in the first period, Jack Eichel was the victim of an errant stick at the hands of Sabres forward Gabriel Bourque. While the stick swing didn't appear to be intentional, his careless use of his stick clipped Eichel in the eye. At first glance, the injury looked to be serious, but after being attended to by team medical staff, Eichel got the all clear. His eye was not damaged. However, he was kept out of last nights game so that the swelling around his orbital bone could ease.

With Eichel and Andrighetto out of action, it was time for the Flames' depth to go to work.

Olivier Fortier, a little used offensively talented center was called to the second line while Sam Reinhart took on Eichel's minutes on the top line. 23-year old Martin Dzierkals, a late third round draft pick of the Flames in the 2021 draft was recalled from Stockton to take Andrighetto's spot on the 2nd line alongside Fortier. Dzierkals did not disappoint in the Flames 6-1 crushing of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Nathan Horton rose to the occasion. Being the only player left of the Flames' normal second line, he setup 3 goals to extend his point streak to 8 games. Infact, the entire newly formed 2nd line scored four of the Flames' six goals. Dzierkals had his first goal of his career and added 2 assists. Grossman, who has been slowly rebounding from a slow start to the season, added 2 goals of his own.

"I was so amped up to play this game. I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity, especially to play on the same line as Nate (Horton). He is such a great guy and anytime a guy like me can get some time on his line to learn, I have to soak it up. You never know when an opportunity like this will come again." said Martin of his first game.

After the game it was announced that Jack Eichel will be returning tomorrow night on the road against the Arizona Coyotes. He will be wearing a full protective face shield. Andrighetto is expected to miss the game while Dzierkals will remain the second line option for the Flames.
