Well, that's not good....

By Jason Besancenez

After 31 games the St. Louis Blues, are to say the least, nowhere near where they thought they would be in the standings. Don’t get me wrong, there was no delusion of them being at the top of the division or conference, but one point above last in the league was not where we thought they would be either.

At 20 games it seemed like they were poised to make that next step. A nice little run would have put them in position to fight for one of the last playoff spots. After going 2-6-2 in their last 10 games, they are going in the complete opposite direction of that.

While the goals against, isn’t bad, it is clear that St. Louis lacks the scoring punch needed to win these games. For the most part the Blues aren’t getting blown out in any games, but they are losing a lot of close games. GM Dave Semyck has been trying to build the team from the defensive side of the puck, has that approach been too defensive focused? Do they need to take some of those young defensive pieces and move them in deals to add some scoring?

Something needs to be done. To finish at the bottom of the league, and not have your first-round pick to at least add a stud young player to the team, would be an outright failure of a season. I would look for some moves to be made. I would think that some of the young, talented defensemen, that will likely bring a great return on the trade market, will at minimum be talked about in trades.

We will see what happens next, all we know is it can’t continue down this path, with no major changes.
