Tampa Bay Wins Home Opener

By Dave Semyck

After a heartbreaking loss to the Nashville Predators on their first game of the season, Tampa Bay rebounded with a win in their home opener last night against the Detroit Red Wings. Pekka Rinne was spectacular as he stopped 36 out of 37 shots to earn the first star of the game. While the Lightning always feel comfortable with Rinne behind them in net, the thought of constantly having 37 shots get past the defense every game will not bode well for the Lightning. Also starring in the game was stud forward Taylor Hall with a two goal and one assist performance. Rounding out the three stars was Marcus Kruger with a two point affair. Sticking to GM Dave Broche's lofty expectations, games like this from Kruger is the exact result that he was hoping as they can win games, allow their young guys to produce but also let the veterans feel like we are not bagging it in for the year.

On the docket for Friday is a road game against the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis has had similar success as Tampa Bay thus far with their 1-1 record but has dramatically scored more goals than Tampa. So far this season St. Louis is averaging 4 goals per game as Tampa is only averaging 2.5. On the flip side of that, St. Louis is allowing 4 goals per game to Tampas 2.5. Because of these numbers, the ideal scenario would be a game where the Tampa Bay offense can break out, even if its at the detriment of the defense.
