Tampa Bay Loses Opener

By Dave Semyck

One day after the Tampa Bay Lightning talks to the players and fans about expecting a competitive and exciting season, the Lightning take the ice and lose their home opener 4-2 to the Nashville Predators. We caught up with GM Dave Broche after the game to get his take on the first game and the results.

Broche - "Hello, thanks for taking the time to connect with me after our first game. I am pretty excited about the result of the opening game, even with a loss that we had suffered. There were a couple things going against us before we even dropped the puck so we knew we were a longshot to win the game. First, we were on the road. Second, were playing the Nashville Predators in their home opener. Third, Nashville is an incredible team. Last season they finished 56-20-5-1, had the best record in the league and had a 26-13-2 home record. Basically, we were playing the best team in the league in their home opener. Thats quite a tall task for any team. If you believe in the law of averages, it also hurt us that Nashville lost their opening game on the road and the chance of them starting off 0-2 was pretty minor."
"Now, that all being said, what I was really impressed with was how we played. Entering the third period, it was only a 3-2 game, Shots were 23-24 in favor of Nashville and, honestly, it was a pretty close game all throughout. The exact thing I wanted to happen, happened as well. Kirby Dach scored his first ever FNHL goal and Danny DeKayser scored two points from the blue line. Remember, we want our young stars to contribute while keeping us competitive in games. Thats exactly what we were hoping for and want to see moving forward. While the fans might not be pumped about starting 0-1, they should be excited to see the development unfold throughout the season."
