After 47 Games

By Duane Goetz

Well, here we are game 47 of the 82-game season and things
are status quo as far as the Canes positioning in the standings of the Eastern
Conference.  That being out of playoffs
looking in, but only 1 point out with a game in hand.  If this team could manage to put together
something more than a win one, lose one level of play, then maybe a little
playoff pressure relief would be the Cane’s new situation.

With a record of 21-17-5-4 the team has had a decent, but
not great, first half of the season, 6-4 in the past 10 could be a lot better
if not for a couple loses in OT.  The team
has struggled winning in OT and with 9 OT games this year those are important
points that are thrown away.

This year is very similar to the Canes season last year, but
it took the last game of the year in order to lock up the very last playoff
spot in the East.  The team was hoping to
build on last years successes with an upgrade in the quality of play both as a team
and on an individual basis.

On a player level, Ovi continues his fountain of youth play performing
at almost a point a game level at the grand old age of 40.  Lance Bouma has been a very pleasant surprise
since being picked up this past offseason off the UFA market.  Bouma has put up the very formidable numbers 20g
12a for 32 points in 47 games, all that being done playing on the 3rd
line with limited minutes.

Stay tuned.
