Pietrangelo to New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils had a major hole to fill on defense, and today did just that in free agency, inking Alex Pietrangelo to a 5 year deal.

The 30 year old defenseman was one of the biggest names available on the blueline, and with plenty of cap space, gave him a front loaded contract that will pay him 7.5 million this season, but drops as the contract progresses. "Alex has been a mainstay in Carolina, consistently putting up 40 point seasons while still providing a physical presence. He's the perfect complement to John Carlson on our top pairing and is a unique player we haven't had in some time," said the Devils GM.

The Devils also signed winger Charlie Coyle to a 4 year contract. The 28 year old will be given a chance in the bottom 6 this season and the Devils believe he has the skill set to move his way up the lineup.

New Jersey still has plenty of cap room, and despite rebuilding, believe they are icing a much more competitive team this season. "We have a mix of very good veterans and a few young players ready to jump into the lineup. There's some excitement in New Jersey this offseason and our patience over the past few seasons is about to pay off."
