Devils Make Blockbuster Deal

Drouin, Rubstov, Van Riemsdyk To NJ

Reports out of New Jersey are that the Devils have made a blockbuster trade with the Nashville Predators. After early afternoon rumblings that Olli Juolevi, a former 3rd overall pick, was on the block, the deal took just minutes to go down.

Juolevi, along with leading team scorer Jamie McGinn and journeyman Kyle Brodziak, were sent to the Predators for 3 top young players.

Juolevi was touted as the Devils future on the blueline, but another season of struggles out of the gate led the Devils GM to shake up the roster and look to the future in a different way. Juolevi had a modest rookie campaign with 26 points in 82 games. But he wasn't taking the next step as the Devils had hoped, and used their best asset to acquire more youth.

The centerpiece of the deal was Jonathan Drouin, a former 2nd overall pick who has struggled on a deep Predators team after taking the league by storm. Drouin had a 77 point campaign in his sophomore season, but couldn't keep up that pace. Forced to the 3rd line in Nashville, he has just 5 points in 20 games. "We've seen what he can do, and he'll be given every opportunity to regain his form," said GM Erb. Drouin is expected to move to left wing and be paired with veterans Evgeni Malkin and Mason Raymond.

German Rubstov, another former 1st round pick, has lit up the minor leagues in his young career. The 19 year old center will join the Devils add more scoring punch.

Finally, Trevor Van Riemsdyk, an early 2nd round pick and well rounded defenseman will also jump into the Devils lineup.

"We needed a shakeup, and in the early season, this isn't just a move for the future, we think this deal can help us now. With the parity in the league, we're just 5 points out of the playoffs despite being at the bottom of the East. If these new guys find chemistry, we feel we're still a competitive team."

The Devils have tomorrow off before traveling to Detroit where all 3 players will meet the team and be in the lineup.
