PistolNucks Mock Draft v.2

Picks 21-30

Pick #21 Originally owned by: PIT Owned by: NAS

Needs: More future 1st round picks

Trade: Pittsburgh Penguins send Alex Tanguay, Ryan Suter, PIT 2021 Rnd 1, PIT 2023 Rnd 1, $1,500,000 to the Nashville Predators for Jack Johnson, Jonas Ahnelo

Selection: C Ryan Poehling 72 OV

Commentary: I actually expect this pick to be trade bait come draft time. This pick represents likely the last choice in this tier of player, but Poehling isn’t a Harris kind of player. Maybe they take him just as an asset, but this could be a spot people are trying to trade up to as well.

Pick #22 Originally owned by: CAR Owned by: FLA

Needs: Defensive Dmen, youth at C

Trade: Carolina Hurricanes send Justin Faulk, CAR 2023 Rnd 1 to the Florida Panthers for Jonathan Huberdeau, FLA 2023 Rnd 2

Selection: D Cal Foote 71 OV

Commentary: Foote is the best defensive Dman in the draft. He is a large, physical player like his father, but is a better skater and therefore may have more offensive upside. He isn’t pro ready, but give him a two seasons on the farm and he could be on his way to being a top-pair Dman.

Pick #23 Originally owned by: SJS Owned by: NAS

Needs: A GM with a plan for the future

Trade: San Jose Sharks send Alexandre Burrows, Jay Bouwmeester, Nikita Zadorov, SJS 2021 Rnd 1, SJS 2023 Rnd 1 to the Nashville Predators for Anton Babchuk, Dustin Boyd, Michael Grabner, Michael Latta, Stephen Johns, NAS 2020 Rnd 2

Selection: W Kristian Vesalainen 71 OV

Commentary: Huge winger who can play on both sides of the ice. Has scoring upside but could also be a power forward with enough time to grow. No worries about that in Nashville, they can take Vaselainen here and give him 2-3 years before he is pro ready.

Pick #24 Originally owned by: FLA Owned by: EDM

Needs: High end youth, mainly wing and D

Trade: Florida Panthers send FLA 2023 Rnd 1 to the Edmonton Oilers for Beau Bennett, VAN 2023 Rnd 2, EDM 2026 Rnd 1

Selection: D Conor Timmins 71 OV

Commentary: Edmonton has a great team but they are clearly looking to get younger, moving Ersberg and putting Raanta in net, moving Kreider, etc. Timmins is a nice future piece for them, he’s a two-way guy who can be a top-4 Dman after a couple of farm seasons. Edmonton doesn’t need him right now so he will get the time he needs to develop.

Pick #25 Originally owned by: MTL Owned by: PHI

Needs: youth up front

Trade: Philadelphia Flyers send Jordan Kyrou to the Boston Bruins for MON 2023 Rnd 1

Selection: C Morgan Frost 71 OV

Commentary: This is hard to mock because Philly is actively shopping this pick to try and upgrade their forward core. If they end up keeping the pick I think Frost is the pick, as he has the best offensive upside of any player left in the draft. He has top-line potential, though he will need some big farm seasons to get there, his offensive ratings are promising though.

Pick #26 Originally owned by: EDM Owned by: OTT

Needs: Youth on the wings

Trade: Nashville Predators send Evan Brophey, Samuel Groulx, EDM 2023 Rnd 1 to the Ottawa Senators for Dmitri Kosmachev (rental), Thomas Vanek, DET 2025 Rnd 2, $1,500,000

Selection: C Josh Norris 71 OV

Commentary: I wouldn’t be surprised to see this pick on the move too. Ottawa has made quite a few moves this offseason to get better, and packaging this pick with a player or prospect could improve their pro team. IF they stand pat Norris is a good fit, he has good offensive upside and should be a top-6 forward eventually

Pick #27 Originally owned by: NYR Owned by: STL

Needs: high end youth, especially on D

Trade: Detroit sends Antti Niemi, NYR 2023 Rnd 1, DET 2024 Rnd 1 to St. Louis for Kyle Turris

Selection: D Urho Vaakanainen 71 OV

Commentary: The Blues didn’t get their Dman with their early 1st, but now that they have another first they can grab a Dman here. Vaakanainen is a nice little player who has two-way top-4 upside and becomes St. Louis’ top D prospect immediately.

Pick #28 Originally owned by: NAS Owned by: NJD

Needs: youth up front

Trade: New Jersey Devils send NJD 2023 Rnd 1, EDM 2023 Rnd 2 to the Nashville Predators for Cory Schneider, Jason Garrison, Karl Alzner, Nail Yakupov, NAS 2023 Rnd 1, FLA 2024 Rnd 3

Selection: C Michael Rasmussen 71 OV

Commentary: A huge center who is the strongest player in the draft, Rasmussen has an offensive game that you don’t usually get in a player like this. Rasmussen is one of the biggest boom-bust prospects in the draft. If he can have a good season or two on the farm, we could be talking about Rasmussen as the best player in the draft, on the flip side one bad season and he could be nothing more than a 4th liner.

Pick #29 Originally owned by: VAN Owned by: WPG

Needs: High-end youth

Trade: Winnipeg Jets send Dylan Larkin, Mark Arcobello to the Philadelphia Flyers for Erik Karlsson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, VAN 2023 Rnd 1, WPG 2026 Rnd 3, $300,000

Selection: W Klim Kostin 70 OV

Commentary: Winnipeg doesn’t seem thrilled about having their choice of players in this tier, but it could work out well for them. Kostin has a high upside, could be a top line winger if everything breaks right. He should get time to marinate on the farm as Winnipeg clearly is looking to compete.

Pick #30 Originally owned by: MIN Owned by: VAN

Needs: Youth depth, especially on D

Trade: Vancouver Canucks send Matt Clark, Radek Faksa, SJS 2020 Rnd 1, $2,500,000 to the Dallas Stars for Erik Johnson, MIN 2023 Rnd 1

Selection: D Caleb Jones 70 OV

Commentary: Vancouver could use some D prospects having dealt Hanifin and focusing on forwards the last few drafts. Jones probably doesn’t have top line upside, may not even have top-4 upside, but he probably will make the pros, so he is a safe pick here.
