Devils Clinch Dead Last

But there's reason for optimism

The New Jersey Devils had a historically bad start to the season, losing their first 10, and never moved out of dead last in the East. With yesterday's loss, they mathematically clinched last place in the FNHL, even with 1 game remaining.

The good news? The Devils own their 1st round pick, meaning Rasmus Dahlin, Andrei Svechnikov, Brady Tkachuk, or Jasperi Kotkaniemi will put on a Devils uniform next season. The Devils also own the Red Wings 1st, which will be around 20th overall. They'll also pick twice early in the 2nd round. Despite the losing season, New Jersey had some bright spots with their youth and could turn it around sooner than expected. Here's a look:

Tyler Johnson - The 25 year old made his pro debut as a late bloomer and exploded for 31 goals and 60 points. Still under contract for just 1.4 million, he'll be one of the league's best bargains as a top 6 forward and is only getting better.

Andre Burakovsky - Many questioned the Devils moving 80 point forward Mason Raymond to Pittsburgh last offseason. But New Jersey was looking towards the future, and with Raymond headed to free agency, the Devils now have a premier 23 year old winger. Burakovsky has scored 60 points, and while needs to work on his defensive game, he's a dynamic piece for the next 10 seasons. And, he's still under contract for 2 more seasons after this for just 2 million.

Jonathan Drouin - The former 2nd overall pick hasn't lived up to the hype, but may have found his niche in New Jersey. Drouin has now put up consecutive 55 point seasons. Still just 23, Drouin has already improved his defensive game and appears to be set for a long career as a top 2 center.

Dylan DeMelo - The 20 year old DeMelo wouldn't crack most team's top 6 defense. But New Jersey gave him a chance, and he answered with 24 points in 72 games. More importantly, he's just a -2 on the worst team in the league.

Brett Howden - Howden was having an average season in the minors, but answered the call when he got a stint for the Devils. The 20 year old center posted 10 points in 16 games for the pro club, and while he could find himself back in the minors next year, he's taken a major step forward that not many saw coming.

Henrik Borgstrom - The former 1st round pick was rushed to the FNHL by the Devils which hurt his development. This year, he was given a full year in the minors and made major strides. He has 78 points in the minors--30 more than a season ago.

Laurent Brossoit - Brossoit was a 3rd round pick for New Jersey who is emerging as a steal. The 20 year old is tied for 6th in the league in the minors for GAA sitting above some of the top goalie prospects in the league. He's also played 46 games, more than any other goalie in the top 10.
